John Lam
John is a friend I’ve known ever since I started my academic education back in Kindergarten at PS 176. He’s the my oldest friend and probably my first real friend. At first, he was a normal classmate, but then later I found out he lived across the streets from me, so we got to see each other more. [I mean, our houses are literally facing each other.] Our moms got to know each other eventually by the end of Kindergarten. You know, parents like to talk to each other about their kids. hehe We’re in the same class again during 1st grade, but after that we never had another class together. Sucks, right? After first grade, I think there was a time-period when we stop talking to each other… for no apparent reason actually. We got back together during second grade, because we went to the same after-school program, Kumon. His mom would always walk me home.
His dad would invite me over to his place on ocassional Saturdays, especially in the Summer, and he would take us to places like Belt Parkway for biking. Cool Guy, his dad.
I think he stopped going to Kumon after second grade, but I still went over to his house on occasional Saturdays, fun times.
We got back together during 4th grade when we went to the same math tutoring teacher and Sunday, school. We went to that teacher until 7th grade. Ouch. Guess, I got a nice math foundation… LOL
Fifth grade, I found out that we aren’t going to the same place. I was accepted into some Honors Program so I got to choose which school I get placed into, but he had to go to Dyker Heights. I wanted Dyker too, but it was too far away as opposed to Christa McAuliffe, which is only a block away. {18 blocks v. 1 block, you choose]. So after elementary school, our main source of connection was that math tutor, whom we went to together. I still went over to his house occasionally. I also think that we went to China together one year, think it was either in 6th or 7th grade.
During 8th grade, I found out again that we weren’t going to the same school. I was going to go to BTech and he was going to Economics and Finance in Manhattan. So once again, we didn’t get together. However, in high school we had much more liberty then middle or elementary school. We would go play ball with each other and hang out with each other more often, because we don’t need our parents now. Haha. I don’t go to his house as often, but yeah we’re still pretty close. Probably, the only person who I’ll spill my deepest most inner secret to, because I know he won’t tell anyone. He would do the same. ^_^
I guess what make this friendship so strong is the fact that we’re able to keep so close to each other, despite all the times we’re separated. Haha. Our parents develop a pretty close relationship too. This September marks the 14th year of our friendship.
